Can I fix a leaking pipe myself using epoxy putty or tape?

You can use epoxy putty or leak tape as a short-term fix for a small pipe leak, but it is not a permanent repair. These products can slow pinholes or hairline cracks so you can prevent damage until a proper fix like a spot repair, section replacement, or relining is done. Clean, dry, and depressurized pipe surfaces are key; patches fail fast on wet or pressurized lines. In our day-to-day work around the Rossville area, we often see temporary patches lift at fittings after pressure and temperature swings. If the pipe is cracked, corroded, or at a joint, plan on a real repair.

Call a licensed plumber fast if you notice:

 • Flow that sprays or won’t stop after shutoff
 • Leaks at valves, unions, or threaded joints
 • Soft, pitted, or green-blue corroded copper
 • Warm spots, hissing, or rising water bills

Shut off the main, relieve pressure by opening a faucet, and contain water before any DIY patch.
Updated: 2026-05-28
Need help in Rossville, IN? Call (765) 262-5364 or book online. “He fixed our water heater leak and was done in 15 minutes!” — Sharon H.
