What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If your toilet won’t flush and there’s no clog, the tank parts likely need a quick check. Make sure the shutoff valve is fully open and the tank refills to the marked water line. In many West Lafayette homes, a loose handle chain, misaligned flapper, or disconnected refill tube stops the flush.

Quick checks:

  • Open the water valve under the tank.
  • Reattach or tighten the handle chain.
  • Reseat or replace the flapper.
  • Aim the refill tube into the overflow.
  • Adjust float so water reaches the fill line.
